I need to get out and do some winter
camping... who here has done this and
what would be the advice of the skilled?
anyone down to make a trip? perhaps
a happy camping trip with some of the
tribe holders?
cheers

Re: winter camping anyone?
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 10:17 PMIf it will be truly Winter(not a California at sea level thing) then remember dress in layers. base layer of silk long underwear, form fitting but not tight. Next layer wool underwear just slightly baggy. Next layer clothes suited to the exact climate, if very cold wool shirt and pants. Outer layer wind proof, wayer proof coat and bib overalls.. That is for your outside time. Socks silk liners and wool socks and boots sized big enough that they are not tight anywhere. If anything is tigh and binding it will not keep you warm. Headwear a balakava and a wool toque(stocking cap) if it is very cold. The reason for layers is two fold. You can add or subtract layers as your level of effort is increased or the day warms. The layers also offer dead air chambers around your body. the more of this chambers you have the warmer you will stay. I could go on more about it but I will answer any questions as you ask them.
Your tent should be a true 4 season tent. You should also use a very sturdy tarpoline lashed to trees on theprevailent upwind side as close to your tent as possible for a wind shear. It should be at least a foot taller than the tent. In Northern Michigan we used to completely surround the tent area with the wind shearing tarpolines with and over lapping gap for exit out of the tent faire ring dining area. Trust me when it is below zero with 20 mph winds that wind shear was a godsend. The tent should also have a rain fly and vestibule. The vestibule so you can have an intermediary area between inside the tent and the outside. This will help keep the interior of the tent a little warmer. If you sleep in a cot don't alow air to circulate around it. Place bags of clothes or some kind of surround arround it to keep air from turning your cot into the refridgerator crisper drawer. Better to sleep on a thick(at least 4 inches) foam pad on the ground. Well it's late and I need to hit the hay but I'll post more if you's like later. -

Re: winter camping anyone?
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 8:10 AMI'm not sure if you already went, if so, how was it? I've got a few other bits of advice: 1. Eat, Eat, Eat! Your body needs a TON of calories and fat to burn. Think of it like this, the more calories you consume, the more energy you will be creating...mo butta mo betta! 2. Pee often. If you are holding your pee in, your body is spending a lot of great calories trying to keep it warm! 3. I LOVE HOTTIES. Boil water, pour it into your nalgene and put a sock over it. Put it smack-dab inbetween your legs (you have a mega-artery there which can determine a lot) or stick some in your sleeping bag b4 you go to bed. Honestly, you will warm up incredibly...it is like heaven in your pants. Make sure its sealed well. 4. Don't go to bed cold. Your sleeping bag holds in whatever is inside. If you are cold when you get in your bag, take off your clothes and put them back on, this will warm you up guaranteed! 5. Don't eat snow (especially the yellow stuff).

Re: winter camping anyone?
Fri, April 21, 2006 - 1:41 AMNow is a good time of year to get out on the snow -- It's still there but the days are sunny and bright. Remember to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Your pee should be clear and copious. -
